The Effects of Sugar on the Brain

Sugar is a dangerous metabolic poison and a leading contributor to our epidemic of chronic disease.  One can vastly improve their health by removing
or at least minimizing the consumption of sugar in their diet.

When you consume refined sugar, the nutrients required to process that sugar (that are in raw sugar cane, but not refined sugar) are not there, so your
body takes those nutrients from your cells and uses them up, causing deficiencies.  Sugar has also shown to increase the release of calcium through the
urinary system, and so your body has no choice but to remove calcium for your bones to replace that calcium, ultimately leading to osteoporosis.  They
also have the same effects on your behaviour as neurotoxins, putting your mind into a hyperactive state.

"If sugar were introduced today as a new product, the FDA would not approve it. FDA approval requires that a product be safe. Evidence
that sugar damages health is overwhelming. It has been associated with diabetes, tooth decay, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases."

                                                                                         - Raymond Francis - MIT trained Scientist/Author

Sugar has also been linked to various behavioural problems, such as ADD and acts of aggression/anger.
Let's take a look at sugar's effects on the human brain:

Sugar consumption produces a release of insulin.  When insulin is released you
get hypoglycemia if it's excessive - that is, the blood sugar falls.  When the blood
sugar falls it does two things:

   1. Your body is trying to get that blood sugar back up because it needs it for
energy metabolism.  So it stimulates the Adrenal Gland to release two
hormones - Epinephrine and Norepinephrine.  These are the hormones that
make you nervous and jittery when your blood sugar falls.

   2. Your brain also releases neurotransmitters called Glutamate.  Glutamate is the
primary neurotransmitter for excitability. It is the primary thing that turns the
    brains activity into high gear.

So the Epinephrine, Norepinephrine and Glutamate are producing a state of
    hyperactivity.

This hyperactivity occurs with the consumption of sugar, as well as MSG
(monosodium glutamate) present in nearly all processed foods.  This also occurs from high consumption of bleached flour products such as white
bread, as well as large amounts of potatoes or potatoe products.

    - In 1900 Americans consumed 4 pounds of sugar per year.
    - Today, the average American consumes 129 pounds of sugar per year - a 2500% increase.

    The bottom line:
The more you slow down on the consumption of sugars, the healthier you will be.
Eat raw honey, even eat your favourite dessert once in a while - but eat them in moderation.
